Renault officially showed the 4 series electric car: known characteristics
The French car brand Renault plans to present the revived Model 4 as an electric vehicle at the Paris Motor Show in late October. And on the eve of this event, the manufacturer showed the first photos of the car.
According to Autocar, the photos confirm that the electric crossover will retain most of the stylistic features of the 4Ever Trophy 2022 concept. In particular, the production model will have a distinctive backlit grille and three-section taillights.
The footage also confirms that the 4 will be offered with an optional folding fabric roof, and it will also be the first Renault to feature an illuminated front emblem. The spirit of the 1961 compact city car will be revived in the roof-mounted mini-spoiler, trapezoidal rear windows, vertical bumper plates and other elements.
The new Renault 4 follows the smaller and technically identical Renault 5, which was presented in a production model at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. The design of that model was kept as close as possible to the 2021 Concept 5.
Renault positioned the 4 as a taller and wider alternative to the 5, hoping to capture a share of the popular compact crossover market. With a length of 4.14 meters, it is similar in size to the Vauxhall Mokka. Late prototypes spotted testing on public roads show that the production 4 also retains the square shape of the 4Ever Trophy concept.
It is noteworthy that the prototypes are probably the main elements of the Model 4 lineup. One of them is a basic hatchback on steel wheels, and the other is a crossover with increased ground clearance, equipped with alloy wheels, rails and a recognizable U-shaped body.
It is quite possible that the more aggressive car is a special version inspired by the 4Ever model. The same was created on the basis of modified 4s that take part in the annual 4L Trophy rally.
4 will use the Renault Group's Ampr Small EV platform from the 5. The two electric vehicles will even have the same wheelbase of 2.54 m.
It is worth noting that the Renault 5 model is expected to offer three single-engine front-wheel drive powertrains with an output of 94 hp, 121 hp and 148 hp, as well as 40 kWh and 52 kWh batteries. Meanwhile, the multi-lever rear axle of the Ampr Small platform can accommodate a second engine, paving the way for an all-wheel drive version.
Images of previous prototypes show that the 4's cabin will have the same dual-screen infotainment system as the 5. It is likely to have a different dashboard design, although inspired by its predecessor.
Production of the 4th model is expected to begin next summer at the Renault ElectriCity plant in northern France. This will happen immediately after the fifth model is delivered to customers.
