Not with bleach: how to whiten your bed to perfect condition naturally
White sheets begin to turn yellow over time due to contact with the body and improper washing. This is a normal process and it is not necessary to fight this yellowing with aggressive chlorine-based bleaches.
Experts say that such substances are one of the worst ways to restore whiteness to sheets. Not least because the regular use of chlorine also causes the appearance of yellow stains. OBOZ.UA asked what fabric care experts advise instead.
All you need to make your bed snow-white again is a few simple products that you already have in your cupboard. And in the kitchen cupboard at that. We are talking about baking soda, vinegar, dishwashing liquid, and lemon juice.
Vinegar is a natural fabric softener, and lemon juice acts as a bleach. The acidity of these products helps to destroy stains.
Dishwashing detergent, on the other hand, effectively removes sweat marks and helps to penetrate deep into the fabric to thoroughly clean its fibers. Soda works to enhance all these components.
To whiten your bedding, all you need to do is fill a large bowl or basin with warm water, add a cup of white vinegar, a cup of lemon juice, half a cup of baking soda, and two tablespoons of dishwashing detergent. Mix everything thoroughly and soak the bedding that needs to be bleached in the resulting solution.
The mixture will also work to restore brightness to colored sheets. But do not soak dyed fabrics for more than 30 minutes. White ones can be soaked for a longer period.
After the bleaching soaks, rinse the bedding lightly and put it in the washing machine. Wash on a normal program with cool water. If you want to enhance the whitening effect, choose a sunny day for washing and hang your clothes to dry in direct sunlight – ultraviolet light will also help restore the fabric's whiteness. If you keep the bed in the sun for 2-4 hours, it will also be thoroughly disinfected.
