"Not conducive to having many children": Russian priests rebel against the movie hit "Barbie"

Russian Orthodox priest criticizes the movie "Barbie"

In Russia, the Hollywood movie "Barbie" starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling is still a hot topic. This time, Boris Krivonogov, a priest of the Russian Orthodox Church from Chelyabinsk, expressed his dissatisfaction. He accused the movie of allegedly "not promoting large families."

Krivonogov shared his observations at a forum in Chelyabinsk during a discussion of demographic problems in the country. How the Russian priest linked the low birth rate to the blockbuster movie is a mystery that even the Russians themselves apparently could not solve.

"Barbie" does not contribute to large families, believe me. The Barbie cult is an anti-state cult. It is also funded," the Chelyabinsk "moralist" said.

The priest did not specify who exactly finances the so-called Barbie cult. But the network is already joking that the script for the movie, according to the Russians, was probably written by Joe Biden himself.

Krivonogov also issued a portion of "instructive" propaganda nonsense that "you cannot love the state if you have not created a family." In this way, he tried to urge his fellow citizens to "return to their historical roots" and create large families. It's funny that after his speech, the priest asked the audience to give him a round of applause, because the listeners themselves hadn't thought of it or simply didn't want to.

This is not the first scandal surrounding the comedy blockbuster in Russia. Previously, the film has been accused of "propaganda" against LGBT people, and in order to protect vulnerable Russians from the influence of this propaganda, the "obscene" scenes in the film were blurred, which made even the citizens of the terrorist country laugh. Interestingly, the screening of Barbie has been officially banned in the aggressor country, so Russians have found a shameful way to avoid movie sanctions - they watch pirated versions of world premieres.

Moreover, the Russian Ministry of Culture has allegedly refused to screen the film. The reason is that foreign films do not meet the objectives of "preserving and strengthening traditional Russian spiritual values."

As a reminder, the premieres of the two major summer 2023 movie hits Barbie and Openhearted took place on the same day, July 20. This divided the audience into two clans: some went to see an instructive comedy about the iconic blonde doll, while others went to see a biographical thriller about the creator of the atomic bomb. However, there were some particularly brave moviegoers who decided to attend two screenings in one day. The Internet even gave this confrontation, or rather cultural phenomenon, a name: "Barbieheimer". However, the "pink" film by Greta Gerwig won the competition. During its first weekend at the box office, Barbie grossed $300 million.

However, both the first and second films, despite their multimillion-dollar box office receipts, managed to acquire haters. Moviegoers around the world find gaffes and historical inaccuracies in the films. Some of them have caused high-profile international scandals. Read more here.

OBOZ.UA also wrote that film critics and viewers are actively sharing their feedback on the sensational movie Barbie. Some call it a beautiful story without a deep meaning, while others, on the contrary, admire the coverage of important topics through the prism of humor along with an interesting non-trivial plot.
