The American startup Neuralink has developed an experimental Blindsight vision implant that will allow even people who are blind from birth to see. Moreover, the device will allow to see even in the infrared and ultraviolet spectra.

The new development of the startup Neuralink was announced by its owner, billionaire entrepreneur Ilon Musk. True, he clarified: so far, the Blindsight implant gives a low-quality picture.

"The Blindsight device from Neuralink will allow even those who have lost both eyes and the optical nerve to see. Provided the visual cortex is intact, it will allow even those who have been blind since birth to see, " Musk emphasized.

So far, the implant's image quality is "as low as the graphics of (Atari game consoles)," Musk noted. However, in the future, the device will allow to see in the infrared and ultraviolet spectrum, and will also be able to work as a radar, he added.

Musk compared his startup's development to a device worn by Jordi La Forge, a character on the Star Trek television series who was blind from birth. But what the device will look like, neither the billionaire nor his startup showed.

Neuralink in general, rather coyly reported that their Blindsight visual implant has received the appropriate approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. That is, it opens the way for human trials of the device. The startup is already looking for volunteers for the trials.

Neuralink is developing brain implants that are supposed to become an interface between the human brain and an electronic device. The startup is developing neural chips that can be implanted directly into the human brain to eliminate the effects of certain diseases, expand memory, treat paralysis, blindness, depression, Parkinson's disease.

The first Neuralink promotional products envisioned the ability to mentally play video games or download into human memory and play back memories. The creators of the TV series "Black Mirror" devoted a separate episode to the latter possibility.

Now Neuralink is suing its former employees and animal advocates - the latter claim that in 2016-2022 during the tests killed at least 1500 test animals (this fact got into several episodes of "The Janitor from the future").
