Thousands of venomous jellyfish have washed up on the coast of the United Kingdom. The marine creatures, also known as Pelagia noctiluca, were found both in the water and dead on the beaches of Cornwall on a 50-kilometer stretch between Falmouth and St. Austell.

The sting of the Mauve Stinger grows up to 10 cm in diameter, and its tentacles can reach up to three meters in length. Although their stings are not fatal, they are quite painful, The Sun writes.

Rachael Edmans, a beachgoer in Falmouth who saw this apocalyptic scene, was amazed by their number.

"I was very surprised to see so many mauve stingers. Usually we see lots of compass jellyfish. But never that many," she says.

The Cornwall Wildlife Trust has posted a jellyfish warning on Facebook, reminding beachgoers that despite their small size, jellyfish sting quite painfully. "It packs a powerful punch, with long tentacles and warty structures on its ‘bell’ full of stinging cells, even when washed ashoree," they explained.
