How to water the garden during the summer heat properly: there are tricky rules

In the dry and hot summer weather, gardeners try to saturate their beds with moisture as much as possible. Regular watering takes a lot of time and effort. At the same time, few people think that improper moisture can only harm plants.

Experts say that the best option for all garden crops is root watering. OBOZ.UA tells you how to water the garden during the June heat properly.

Root watering

Root watering is a truly universal method for vegetable and berry crops. This way you ensure maximum moisture supply to the root system of plants. It can also be a quick option for fertilizing – you can saturate the soil with nutrients by adding various solutions or additives to the water.

Root watering is suitable for both greenhouses and open ground. The easiest way is to take ordinary 1.5-2 liter plastic bottles, rinse them thoroughly, and disinfect them with a solution of potassium permanganate.

All you need to do is cut the bottom of the bottle with a sharp knife and make a few holes in the lid, for example, with an awl. Holes that are too small will not allow sufficient water to flow.

The bottles should be dug into the soil at a distance of 20-25 cm from the plants at a depth of 10-15 cm. The holes can become clogged with soil during watering, so it is better to put some kind of rag at the bottom of the holes. To prevent the liquid from evaporating in extreme heat, the containers can be covered with a cut-off bottom. The specified volume of bottles should be enough for several days.

Is it possible to water the garden with a hose

Water pressure is an important condition for optimal irrigation. If you water the beds with cold water supplied under pressure from a hose, you can damage the leaves, roots, and even stems of the plants.

Do I need to mulch the plants

Mulching will help protect plants from overheating and the soil from drying out. For example, you can put a layer of straw on the bed. Thanks to the mulch, weeds will grow less abundantly, and you will have to water the garden less often.

What time of day to water the garden

During the period of active heat, you should not water the beds. At this time, water evaporates faster, and plants will need more watering to accumulate moisture. In addition, there is a risk that sunburn may appear on the leaves. It is best to water the garden at dawn or in the evening.
