Free coffee, cocktails and skiing: this European capital offers tourists unusual bonuses

CopenPay testing started in Copenhagen

Copenhagen has introduced financial bonuses for tourists. The Danish capital is bucking the trend of other tourist hotspots that are struggling with the burden of too many travelers by trying to attract only well-behaved, socially and environmentally conscious foreigners.

Unlike Barcelona, where locals sprayed tourists with toy water guns in protest, the Danish authorities decided to take other measures, The Guardian writes. The National Tourist Board has introduced a program to encourage climate-tolerant behavior. Now the city will reward those who decide to ride a bike, take public transportation, or do certain work, such as gardening or picking up garbage in the harbor and city parks.

People who come with their own reusable coffee cups can expect to receive a free drink at selected establishments, and other bonuses for good behavior include a free cocktail at the rooftop bar or extra time spent at the city's artificial ski area.

"All of our actions have an impact on the environment, so why not make conscious decisions that benefit us all and get rewarded for it?" the organizers of CopenPay suggest. Mikkel Aarø-Hansen from the official Wonderful Copenhagen tourist board expressed hope that this idea will be a source of inspiration for other cities seeking to find an effective way to create a more mutually beneficial and less burdensome relationship between tourists and locals.

The CopenPay initiative, which will initially run until August 11, is seen by the authorities as something of a pilot project that could be repeated and expanded if successful. In the future, this could include rewarding visitors who travel to Copenhagen by train instead of airplane.
