Autumn Europe: where to go to avoid crowds of tourists
The off-season is considered the best period for an atmospheric trip without crowds of travelers. We'll tell you where to go and what to see below.
Bosnia and Herzegovina
The country is located in the west of the Balkan Peninsula and has access to the Adriatic Sea. We advise you to start your trip in the capital, Sarajevo. The ancient city is famous for its many souvenir shops and traditional Ottoman cafes.
First, go to the Baščaršija Square. This is where the famous Turkish drinking fountain, Sebilj, is located. Also, be sure to visit the oldest mosque in the region - the Tsar's Mosque. It was built in 1462. By the way, the main Catholic church is the Sacred Heart Cathedral. It can be seen on the flag and on the seal.
The next stop is Mostar. The Neretva River flows through the village. Be sure to visit the Old Bridge, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you are looking for an observation deck, head to the top of Hum. It offers incredible views of the surrounding area. By the way, there is a 33-meter high cross here, so believers often come here.
In one of the oldest settlements in Europe, Tuzla, we recommend going to Pannonica Salt Lakes. This is a complex of three lakes with many cafes and restaurants along them.
Liechtenstein
A small principality bordering Austria and Switzerland. By the way, the country has not had an army since 1868. There is also no airport and no railroad. The only way to get here is by bus.
We recommend visiting the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein in Vaduz. Here tourists can see works of contemporary art and the collection of Cologne gallery owner Rolf Ricke. Various exhibitions have been held in the halls of the building, including those of the Ukrainian avant-garde artist of Polish origin Kazimir Malevich.
We also recommend visiting the famous Vaduz Castle, which was built in the XIII century. During its existence, the building has undergone numerous reconstructions. Be sure to go up here to see the panorama of the Alps.
San Marino
The country is located on the slope of Mount Titano and is the oldest sovereign state in the world. By the way, its area is only 61 square kilometers.
It is famous for three medieval towers: Guaita, Cesta, and Montale. The first two can be seen on the official coat of arms of the republic. By the way, you can not only see them, but also go inside.
Also, be sure to visit the largest residential area of Borgo Maggiore. Here tourists can take a cable car ride. We also recommend going to the Palazzo Pubblico della Repubblica di San Marino. All official meetings of the General Council are held here. Here you can get to the changing of the guard ceremony, which takes place on the square in front of the residence every 30 minutes.
Monaco
The microstate is located on the shores of the Ligurian Sea. Be sure to visit the famous Monte Carlo Casino. Travelers can enter the lobby for free and explore the first hall with slot machines.
By the way, the same building houses an opera house. It was commissioned by Prince Charles III. The architect was the French art historian Charles Garnier. It still hosts operas by world-famous composers, including Giacomo Puccini.
Also, don't miss the Oceanographic Museum. There are more than 4 thousand fish in the aquarium. You can also see the skeleton of a whale.
If you want some peace and quiet, head to the Japanese Garden in the Larvotto area. It has a waterfall, a stream, and a rock garden for meditation.
Moldova
An Eastern European country with access to the sea via the Danube River. By the way, the country is a major supplier of essential oils to Europe and the United States.
We recommend starting your trip in Chisinau, the capital of the republic. Here, visit the Museum of National History. The halls of the building house artifacts and materials on the history of Bessarabia and Moldovan statehood. Previously, the building housed a men's gymnasium, a secondary school for boys and a technical university.
We also recommend going to the Soroca Fort, which was built in the 15th century as a defensive structure to resist attacks by the Tatars and Turks. And, of course, visit the Emil Racoviță Cave near the village of Criva. The tunnels of the dungeon form real labyrinths.
Enjoy the autumn atmosphere! Travel to the colorful cities of Europe.
