Apple may release smart glasses and AirPods with cameras: when to expect new products
Apple plans to start producing smart glasses along with Meta Ray-Bans, as well as AirPods with cameras. The company's goal is to use its new Apple Intelligence platform to offer automation as well as precise control over apps, devices, and media. A key part of Apple Intelligence is the new App Intents system, which allows Siri, the digital assistant, to manipulate functions in apps.
Vision Products Group is currently working on at least four new devices. Bloomberg has more details on when to expect the new products.
In 2027, Apple is considering the release of smart glasses and AirPods with cameras. The idea is to save billions of dollars spent on Vision Pro visual intelligence technology, which can scan the environment around the user and provide useful data.
Apple's Vision Pro team created the $3,500 Vison Pro headset, which is destined to become a niche product. Meta Platforms Inc. meanwhile, has had success with Ray-Ban smart glasses that are less ambitious but lighter and cheaper. This company has also just unveiled a prototype of augmented reality glasses.
Experts expect a lower-end Vision headset to appear next year, and a second-generation Vision Pro with a faster chip in 2026.
The lower-end model will cost about $2000 and is likely to use an inferior processor and cheaper materials. It will also lack the EyeSight feature. Given the lower price, Apple expects unit sales of the device to be at least twice the level of the Vision Pro.
Apple is not bringing out new technologies fast enough. The company is no longer a leader in several critical new technologies, while competitors are innovating and inspiring a new generation of users.
Questions have been raised about the future management of the Vision Pro team following Dan Riccio's departure. As reported in Power On, Dan Riccio has retired after more than two decades at Apple.
From 2012 to 2021, he worked as Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering and then moved to a narrower position, leading the Vision product group and the development of Vision Pro. After Riccio's resignation, responsibility for this product now rests with his deputy Mike Rockwell, and hardware manager John Ternus.
