"A perfect city for a weekend": what to visit in Ivano-Frankivsk
For many people, this region is associated with ski resorts. But in fact, the cultural center of Prykarpattia also has something to surprise tourists with. Read on to find out where to go and what to see.
City Hall
There are many such observation towers in our country. They are found in almost every city in western Ukraine. But this one is special. It was rebuilt 4 times, the last time in 1935. The new structure was built by the Poles. Then, unexpectedly, a tower in the style of constructivism appeared among other buildings. And it was this detail that made it famous. For reference: the manner of execution is completely uncharacteristic of buildings of this type.
The City Hall used to house the city magistrate, and now it is the Museum of Local Lore. The museum collects household items of Ukrainians from different parts of Prykarpattia. There are expositions devoted to numismatics, archeology, ethnography, paleontology, etc.
Mickiewicz Square
In spring, you should head straight here. Once upon a time, this was an ordinary and, let's not be afraid of this word, unremarkable square. But later everything changed. Over time, a small park grew up on both sides of the monuments.
You can just sit here, enjoy the springtime fragrances and drink coffee. Of course, don't forget to check out the architectural masterpieces. Namely, the monument to Mickiewicz and the facade of the Regional Music Philharmonic.
Interestingly, the Polish poet never came to Ivano-Frankivsk. But he is honored and loved here. That's why the famous figure was made of marble instead of ordinary stone. By the way, art installations are constantly organized in the park in warm weather.
Fortress Gallery "Bastion"
This place used to be a stronghold that protected the city from enemies, and now it is an exhibition of paintings. The architects managed to turn the idea into reality. They have perfectly combined the remains of the defense structure with the new complex. It seems that no one has made any adjustments.
The Bastion includes not only a gallery. There are a variety of cafes, souvenir shops, clothing and perfume stores, and the Art na Mur contemporary art space.
Stometrivka
When visiting the city in spring, spend more time walking along cozy alleys. To get to know Ivano-Frankivsk better, go to the main street. Sotka (as it is also called) is not a hundred meters long. There are several theories as to why it was so named.
According to one version, the artery used to serve only as a traffic lane, but in the early 80s it was blocked and turned into a pedestrian street. But not completely. A small piece was set aside for people. Hence the name Stometrivka.
All roads lead to Sotka. It became famous back in the days of the Soviet Union. Elite hotels, restaurants, shops, bookstores, etc. were built here.
Potocki Palace
Unfortunately, the monument has survived to this day only in fragments. It is very difficult to restore its authentic appearance. After all, there are not even any sketches of the castle left. In addition, local authorities are in no hurry to start restoration work. But it is still worth your attention.
The building is designed in the palazzo in fortezzo style. Previously, there were bastions around the perimeter of the building, but later the fortifications were demolished. At the same time, the moats were filled in and the ramparts dismantled. Thus, at one point, the outpost, which had withstood the invaders' attacks, lost its defensive capability.
Vovchynets Mountains
Of course, this is not Hoverla, but it offers no less attractive views. It's especially beautiful in the evening when Ivano-Frankivsk begins to twinkle with thousands of lights.
Now it's not just a hill but a real recreation area. As part of a city project, gazebos and swings for children were built here.
By the way, in clear weather, you can see 8 peaks of the Carpathian Mountains from here.
City Lake
The reservoir is also called the Stanislav Sea. In spring, it is especially beautiful here. During this period, you can already rent a catamaran and go for a ride to the Island of Love. And if you're too lazy to strain your muscles, just walk across the bridge. You will have no less unforgettable impressions.
Ivano-Frankivsk is wonderful, beautiful, and inspiring. It is worth coming here for more than one day. But if you are short on time, plan a trip for at least a weekend.
