Three Russian oligarchs lose court case to lift EU sanctions: details

The Court of the European Union in Luxembourg rejected the claims of 3 Russian billionaires, who demanded to lift sanctions against them. In particular, the court did not consider the appeal of ex-owner of the Pipe Metallurgical Company (TMK) Dmitry Pumpyanskiy (fortune estimated at $1.7 billion), his wife Galina and son Alexandr.

"Although Pumpyanskiy did not play a direct role in the military offensive in Ukraine, he is involved in economic sectors that are a significant source of income for the government of the Russian Federation," the published decision said. In this connection, the inclusion of Pumpyanskiy and his relatives in the sanctions list was recognized as justified.

The court also rejected the claims of billionaire Gennady Timchenko ($18.5 billion) and his wife Elena, who is close to the Russian president. In addition to lifting the restrictions, Timchenko demanded compensation of 1 million euros.

The court also refused to consider the removal of sanctions from billionaire Mikhail Gutseriev ($3.5 billion), blacklisted for supporting the Belarusian dictator and illegitimate president Alexander Lukashenko after the rigged presidential elections in 2020.

In addition, the lawsuit to lift sanctions against the former managing director of Yandex, Tigran Khudaverdyan, who insisted that the grounds cited by the EU for imposing sanctions were "insufficient and there was no credible evidence to support them," remained pending.
