How to properly ventilate an apartment in winter: how the 5 by 5 method works and what mistakes can be made
Ventilation is a prerequisite for maintaining a healthy atmosphere in the home. But in winter, we often forget about it because we don't want to let the warm air out. Especially if it's freezing outside.
Meanwhile, doctors say that only regular ventilation will help cleanse the indoor air of harmful gases, including excess CO2, maintain humidity, and even reduce the amount of household dust. OBOZ.UA asked how to properly ventilate your home in winter to ensure comfortable and healthy conditions and not to cool the room.
Use the winter ventilation mode
Modern double-glazed windows often have an additional mode - the so-called winter ventilation or micro-ventilation. When you move the handle to a position at an angle of 45 degrees upwards, the frame opens to a small gap through which air flows in a weak stream, which is quite enough to refresh the atmosphere in the house. But you should not keep the window in this mode for a long time either. Too much airing in winter can make the temperature in the house too low under any circumstances, which is also bad for health.
The 5 by 5 method
Experts have calculated that for a high-quality indoor atmosphere in winter, ventilation can be carried out using the 5 by 5 method - opening the windows for 5 minutes during the day 5 times. This will help let in enough fresh air without losing precious heat. If you use the winter ventilation mode instead of opening the window in the window mode, you can increase this time to 10 minutes.
If there is no one at home during the day, you can ventilate not 5 but 3 times a day. Once in the morning when you wake up, the second time as soon as you get home from school or work, and the third time before you go to bed.
In winter, you should not exceed the 5 minute airing limit. You can also set a timer to help you meet the deadline. Such an intermittent mode works quite effectively and meets all the needs of residents.
