What to plant after strawberries to restore soil fertility: the harvest will be much better

Yulia PoteriankoLife
After strawberries, it is better not to plant berry bushes or strawberries, for example.

In vegetable gardening, it is important not only to have the right neighbourhood of plants, but also to rotate them adequately in the same area. Plants take turns enriching the soil with various substances, which can benefit other crops the following year. It is also good for the soil itself, which is not depleted and brings more benefits.

OBOZREVATEL figured out what is better to plant in the garden where strawberries used to grow. And how it can be useful. And which options are better to refuse.

What not to plant after strawberries

Any berry bushes, such as currants or raspberries, would be a bad choice, because they are perennials that are not easy to move - such crops do not like to "move". Therefore, it is better to grow them in the garden rather than in the garden.

Changing the strawberry variety is also not an option in this situation. Whatever it is, any strawberry eats the same substances, so all varieties will deplete the soil in about the same way.

Strawberries are also not suitable for such alternation. It is a closely related species to strawberries, so the plant after its relative will receive insufficient nutrition from the soil and continue to deplete it.

What is good to plant after strawberries

Legumes are a good option for a bed that used to grow berries. They feed on the same substances as strawberries and at the same time enrich the soil with nitrogen. This way, it will restore its fertility well. Peas, beans or lentils are a good choice.

Siderata plants, also known as green manure, can also be chosen for the bed where the strawberries were. They enrich the soil with nitrogen, suppress weed growth, and their green mass, cut before the flowering season, will be a good all-round fertiliser. Here you can choose between rye, barley, oats, sunflower, lupine, mustard and other types.

If you want to harvest from the garden, plant onions or garlic. These vegetables will disinfect the soil with the help of the natural phytoncides they contain. And they will grow well after strawberries.

You can also grow peonies in the place of a strawberry bed. They will bloom profusely with this alternation.
