Stoltenberg and Zelenskyy held talks

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks in Kyiv with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. The main topics discussed by the Head of State and the Secretary General of the military bloc were security guarantees and the provision of weapons to Ukraine to continue the fight against the Russian occupiers.

According to the President, Ukraine would like to see clear answers to the question of our country's future in NATO. Zelenskyy said this at a press conference dedicated to the results of his talks with Stoltenberg (scroll to the bottom of the page to see photos and video).

Zelenskyy noted that he had discussed with the NATO Secretary General the upcoming meeting of defence ministers of partner countries on military assistance in the Ramstein format. In particular, they discussed the provision of weapons that would allow the Ukrainian Armed Forces to move forward and establish peace in Europe as soon as possible.

"We interpret this visit of the Secretary General, the first since the full-scale war, as a sign that the Alliance is ready to start a new chapter in its relations with Ukraine. Today at the talks we touched upon the main issues. First: Ramstein, the meeting that will take place tomorrow, and the decisions we expect from our partners. First and foremost, it concerns the armed support for our active actions. The further our soldiers on the front line can move, the sooner peace will return to Ukraine and the whole of Europe," Zelenskyy said.

In addition, Zelenskyy discussed with Stoltenberg the indecision of some countries in providing certain types of weapons. The Head of State stressed that the inhibition of necessary actions costs the lives of Ukrainian soldiers. At the same time, the President noted that Ukraine had not received vital defence instruments.

"The second issue is a certain indecision of some of our partners regarding defence. I have asked the Secretary General to help us overcome the reticence of our partners to supply certain weapons. Namely, long-range, modern aircraft, artillery, armoured vehicles. Slowing down the relevant decisions means time lost for peace, it means the lives of our soldiers who have not yet received vital defence tools," the President noted.

Zelenskyy also outlined Ukraine's specific expectations from the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, which will take place on July 11-12. The President noted that our country highly appreciates military assistance, but at the same time wants to receive a concrete answer when NATO's doors are opened.

The Head of State emphasised that uncertainty with security fuelled the aggressor's illusions. Therefore, clear certainty in security issues will become a reliable protection against the recurrence of aggression against Ukraine and other European states.

"We have a partial answer to what steps we expect, and we expect steps. Very concrete steps forward, when we would like to understand that Ukraine will be in NATO. We have started talking about this with the Secretary General. We need more than the format of our relationship that we have today. We appreciate that Ukraine is supported with weapons, but we want to understand when Ukraine will be in NATO," Zelenskyy said.

According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine, for its part, will do everything to become a NATO member. At the same time, he added that it is the specific decisions of partners that will guarantee security for the future peace in our country.

"We also want security guarantees. We are not preparing an alternative to NATO membership and do not see it as a compromise. And I am not saying this to our society, our society is clearly aware of this. I am saying this to some leaders who are looking for permanent compromises to Ukraine's future membership in NATO. We believe that these are the guarantees of security for Ukraine. And while we are on this path, while we are not yet in the Alliance, we would like to confirm this and be very specific about it. We, for our part, will definitely prepare everything," the President of Ukraine stressed.

Recall that Czech President Petr Pavel called for increased assistance to Ukraine to ensure victory over the aggressor country Russia. He said that our country should become a NATO member after winning the war.

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that allied countries should provide Ukraine with even more weapons and other resources. This is the only way to help our country win and regain its territories.

Earlier, Stoltenberg said that NATO countries would develop a plan for long-term support for Ukraine.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Ukraine expects to discuss our country's progress towards membership at the NATO summit in Vilnius (Lithuania) on July 11-12. Many other decisions are being prepared, as well as "certain security guarantees" for our country.
