How to grow very sweet watermelons: will be tastier than store-bought

Watermelon is the most widespread and favourite melon crop in Ukraine. Kherson's famous watermelons are legendary around the world. This is a generally unpretentious crop that takes root well in the soil and produces a rich harvest.

Watermelon seedlings do not like sudden changes in temperature. They should be planted only when the weather is consistently warm and sunny. Read how to grow very sweet watermelons in the OBOZREVATEL article.

When to plant watermelons

The planting period depends on the weather conditions. It is important that the air temperature does not drop below +12°C day and night - otherwise the seedlings will simply freeze. Mid to late May and early June are ideal times for planting gourds.

Basic rules for planting

Watermelons are planted outdoors from seeds. You can buy them at an agricultural store - then they will be properly processed and ready for planting. If you decide to plant watermelons from your own seeds, it is better to process them. Put the seeds in a cloth bag and put them in water for 3 hours. After that, put the bag in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for 30 minutes. Next, put the seeds on cotton wool and leave them in a sunny, warm place for 2 days until the first sprouts appear.

For watermelons, it is advised to choose a bed that will receive sufficient sun during the season.

You need to dig holes of about 30 cm and put stems and leaves of any grass on the bottom as organic fertiliser. Then plant the watermelon. Experts say that the greenery will not only fill the roots with nitrogen, but will also warm them up in case of low temperatures.

Seedlings are advised to be watered 1-2 times a week. When the first fruits appear, watering should be stopped.

Watermelons can be fertilised with potash fertilisers during the process of growth and development. This should be done from the second week after planting.
