How to clean glassware from soot and old grease: life hacks that will save your holiday
After cooking Christmas dinner, there are a lot of dirty dishes left over. In particular, glass baking dishes. In the oven, they can become covered with soot and burnt fat, and these types of stains can be quite difficult to clean. If you need to clean glasses and crystal salad bowls, it is important not to scratch the glass to preserve its appearance.
OBOZ.UA has collected several life hacks to make it easier to wash glassware. You don't need aggressive household chemicals and harsh abrasives for this.
Vinegar or citric acid
Food acids, such as acetic or citric acids, are excellent at dissolving even stubborn grease. They can be used to clean glass without scratching it, which is also important. To use citric acid, dissolve 100 grams of dry detergent in a large bowl of very hot water and place the stained glass in it. After a few hours of soaking, even stubborn dirt should come off the glass very easily. If you can't remove the entire layer of burnt-on grease, simply repeat the procedure.
If you need to clean the glass mechanically, you can use a mild paste of vinegar and cornstarch. It won't scratch the surface either, and it will be ruthless with stubborn dirt. Mix vinegar and starch in a 1:1 ratio. The resulting substance will need to be applied to the contaminated area and kept for 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the stubbornness of the stain. When the vinegar has dissolved the grease, you will only need to rub the vessel with starch and it will shine like new.
Baking soda and dishwashing liquid
Another combination cleaner that is tough on grease and gentle enough for glass. Add enough dishwashing liquid to the required amount of dry soda to make a thick paste. Lubricate the dirt with it and leave it on for 15-20 minutes, then scrub the dish with a sponge until it is completely removed and rinse thoroughly.
Mustard powder
The substances that give mustard its characteristic pungent flavor are also very effective against grease, and the texture of the product does not harm glass. So mustard powder can be used both for soaking and cleaning glassware. In the first case, dilute two full tablespoons of powder in a large bowl of hot water and leave the dishes in this solution for 10-15 minutes. For stains that don't come out, you can make a paste of mustard and water and wipe the stained area with it to remove the residue mechanically. All that's left is to wash the dish under running water.
