Rules for caring for an orchid

Capricious orchids require special care. Direct sunlight and excessive heat can lead to the death of the plant.

During the daytime, you should move the flowerpot to the back of the room. Orchids need a sufficient amount of light but without direct contact with the intense sun. OBOZREVATEL has compiled the best tips for caring for an orchid.

Can orchids be placed on balconies and windows

During the summer months, orchids should not be placed on windowsills and balconies, especially on the south side. If the windows face east or west, the midday sun will not harm the plant. In general, the orchid needs about 12 hours of lighting per day.

Do not place the orchid on windowsills facing a roadway. For the plant, dust is a moisture absorbent, meaning the more dust that settles on the leaves, the more likely the flower will dry out and wither. Give the orchid a shower by moderately spraying it with a spray bottle - this will simultaneously wash away the dust and moisturize the leaves. You can place the plant next to a humidifier, aquarium, or water tray.

Watering rules

The orchid should be watered 2-4 times a week. The regimen is determined individually, depending on the air temperature, humidity level, size, age, and type of flower. You can determine the level of humidity by the presence of condensation droplets on the transparent walls of the pot or by dipping your finger into the substrate.

In addition to direct watering, experts advise immersing the flowerpot in water for 30-40 minutes. The water level should match the level of the substrate.

Optimal temperature

The difference between day and night temperatures should be 3-6 °C. The plant does not like sudden changes and drafts. At night, you can put the flower on a balcony or windowsill, and during the day, return it to a more shaded place.

Fertilization

Fertilization should be done in a moist substrate. Experts recommend spraying the leaves with special tonic sprays during the growth and flowering period, which will stimulate development, reduce dust adhesion, and maintain humidity levels.

It is imperative to maintain air ventilation. The following can lead to the development of fungal infections:

  • Stagnant air.
  • Unevenly arranged drainage.
  • Soil that is too dense.
  • Poor air permeability of the substrate.
  • Lack of regular ventilation.

If the orchid lacks light, the leaves will visually become thin and long, and the internodes will weaken. Too intense lighting will cause the formation of dry areas on the leaves, and the plant will gradually lose color.
