How to dry walnuts so that they are not bitter: the best ways

Yulia PoteriankoFood
Walnut is a very valuable food product, so it is important not to spoil it during drying

Walnuts are a very valuable product, rich in vitamins, iodine, zinc, and healthy polyunsaturated fats. Fortunately, this treasure grows well in our region and yields rich harvests. However, freshly picked ripe nuts are not as tasty, so they need to be dried.

According to Kobieta, if done incorrectly, the nuts will become bitter, which, in particular, spoils the taste of the dishes to which they are added and has a bad effect on their nutritional properties. In addition, well-dried fruits will not be affected by mold or pests.

What you shouldn't do is try to speed up the drying process by placing them on heaters or putting them in the oven. The sun will be the best helper in this process. It will take several days to dry, so choose a time when the good weather will be a little longer. Spread the nuts in their shells in a single layer on a waterproof material so that they are lying on the ground. Turn them over from time to time. After a few days, simply collect your harvest in a ventilated container: the dried fruit should not get moldy.

If the weather does not allow this method of drying, use an old stocking or mesh container. Fill it with the peeled fruit and place it in a warm, well-ventilated place. In this case, the nuts can be placed near the heating, but not in direct contact with it.

To prevent dried nuts from losing their properties and becoming bitter, they must be stored properly. An airtight container or paper bag is suitable for peeled fruits. In such conditions, they will retain their properties for up to 3 months. If you want to store nuts longer, put them in the refrigerator or freeze them. Nuts in their shells are best stored in a linen bag or paper bag.
