80-year-old Choi Soon-hwa has been named a finalist in this year's Miss Universe Korea competition and may make history as the oldest participant in an international beauty pageant. The woman will compete for the opportunity to represent her country at Miss Universe 2024 in Mexico with 31 rivals, most of whom are much younger than her.
According to CNN, throughout the event's existence, the organizers have imposed strict age restrictions that allowed girls from 18 to 28 years old to participate. However, in 2024, the situation changed, as the number of requests for modernization of the competition increased.
"I want to stun the world, like: 'How is an 80-year-old woman so healthy? How did she maintain this body? What is your diet?" When you get older, you gain weight. So I want to show that we can be healthy even when we get older," said the 80-year-old finalist.
According to Choi Soon-hwa, her modeling career started quite late. After retiring, she had to face severe financial difficulties, which led her to work as a nurse in a hospital. She admitted that it was there that she decided to enter the fashion industry.
"One of my patients told me to try my hand at modeling. I thought it was nonsense. But at the same time, she awakened my old dream of becoming a model, wearing beautiful clothes, and participating in photo shoots. So I said: "Yes, I've dreamed about it before, I have to try it," the Korean woman said.
At the age of 72, Choi Soon-hwa started attending classes at a modeling academy. Later, she signed a contract with a popular agency and made her debut at Seoul Fashion Week in 2018.
"Having a beautiful appearance is important, but I think you also need to have inner peace and respect for others. In addition, you have to think positively. Today, so many people are negative," the woman shared her vision of true beauty.
