Ukraine's National Council appeals to Disney due to high-profile decision regarding 20 Days in Mariupol: the world must see the horrors of war
The National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting has asked Disney to include the award ceremony for 20 Days in Mariupol in the 90-minute international version of the Oscars 2024. The Ukrainian film won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. This was followed by a powerful speech by director Mstyslav Chernov, which lasted 45 seconds.
However, this fragment was not included in the shortened broadcast due to its limited duration. A letter addressed to The Walt Disney Company with a request to include the award for 20 Days in Mariupol in the 90-minute version was published on the official Facebook page of the National Council.
The message states that on March 10, 2022, Disney withdrew from Russia, supporting Ukraine in the war. However, it goes on to say that when all democracies in the world are aimed at countering Russian aggression and preserving peace, the company decides to remove the fragment with the awarding of Ukrainian journalists "for a full-length documentary that tells about the horrors and inhuman cruelty of war."
The regulator of the National Broadcasting Council has reviewed the studio's explanation for the formation of the 90-minute version. However, Ukrainian representatives believe that these could only be preliminary agreements.
"Therefore, we are asking to create and distribute an updated international version among broadcasters, which will include the fragment with the Best Documentary Feature nomination," the National Council's letter says.
