Ukraine has succeeded in canceling the Russian ballet's tour in South Korea: it has no place on the world stage
The day before the premiere, Russian ballet performances in South Korea were canceled. The Bolshoi Ballet's prima ballerina, Putinist Svetlana Zakharova, was supposed to appear on stage. Back in 2023, the theater itself decided to "punish" artists who condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine, so we can only guess what topics the actors would have covered.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine initiated the cancellation of the ballet in South Korea. The government agency posted on Facebook that this move brings Russian culture closer to complete isolation at the international level.
"At the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the Russian ballet's tour in South Korea was canceled, which is another step towards the international isolation of Russia in the field of culture. Thanks to the efforts of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Korea and with the support of the Ukrainian community and international partners, the performance of the Russian prima ballerina with the Modance project at the Seoul Art Center and the Bolshoi Ballet Gala Concert in the South Korean capital will no longer take place," the Foreign Ministry said.
The Russians' performances could have taken place from April 16 to 18 in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. Probably, the main role in the ballet "Modance" should have been played by Svetlana Zakharova, who is one of the most important characters in the original show. However, it is not known whether this could really happen, because, according to Reuters, the number of Russian actors had to be significantly reduced.
"Russian 'cultural' propaganda should have no place on international platforms, and Russian ballerinas should not be on the stages of world theaters," the Foreign Ministry added.
The Russian Consulate in South Korea commented on the organizers' decision to cancel the performances on Facebook.
"It was with great regret that we learned about the cancellation of the gala concerts of Russian ballet dancers that were scheduled as part of the commercial project of the Ballet & Model company on April 16-18. We share our deep disappointment with the many Korean fans and compatriots living in Korea, and we look forward to this meeting with the highest level of artists," the consulate wrote.
In particular, representatives of the consulate recalled the cancellation of another Russian ballet with Zakharova in the lead role and noticed a negative "trend in cooperation with Russia." "We cannot help but see in these steps a certain trend in the South Korean side's approaches to cooperation with Russia now in the field of culture. We need to take this into account," the consulate cryptically said.
On March 15, the concert of Svitlana Zakharova, a traitorous dancer from Lutsk, was already canceled by the organizer. The ballet was to take place from April 17 to 21 at the Seoul Arts Center Opera House. The decision was made for the sake of alleged safety for the audience and artists. The outrage of the Ukrainian Embassy in South Korea over the spread of propaganda at the international level also had a significant impact on this.
Earlier, OBOZ.UA reported that the Foreign Ministry's appeal forced the HBO streaming company to say goodbye to Serbian actor Milos Bykovic, who supports the war and has a Russian passport. The actor was supposed to star in the third season of the popular TV series "White Lotus".
