The missile strikes did not stop: 5 world celebrities who visited Ukraine during the war. Photo
For 519 days now, the world's attention has been focused on Ukraine because of Russia's full-scale invasion. On the eve of the war, most states urged their citizens to leave Ukrainian territory because of the danger. In the first days of martial law, mostly all diplomats, students and other foreigners evacuated abroad.
However, there are stars in Hollywood who were not afraid and visited Ukrainians in these difficult times. OBOZREVATEL tells about the celebrities who visited Ukraine during the war: some of them volunteered, some were at the front, and some just came to visit.
- Angelina Jolie
Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie arrived in Ukraine, specifically in Lviv, on 30 April 2022. The star decided to visit Ukrainians on her own initiative, not with the UN mission. Jolie visited a hospital where injured children are being treated, talked to volunteers, orphans in boarding schools and evacuees at the railway station. In addition, the star walked the streets during the alert and tasted Lviv croissants.
- Sean Penn
Sean Penn, a frequent visitor to Ukraine, came to make a film about Russian crimes. In 2022, he visited Kyiv three times. The American director handed over his Oscar statuette to Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a symbol of faith in Ukraine's victory.
The President presented Sean Penn with the Order of Merit, III class, for significant personal services in strengthening interstate cooperation, supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. The "Alley of Courage" on Constitution Square in Kyiv features plaques with the initials of world leaders who helped Ukraine during the full-scale Russian invasion, including a plaque with Sean Penn's name on it.
- Ben Stiller
Hollywood actor Ben Stiller arrived at the Polish-Ukrainian border to meet with refugees and then met with Zelenskyy. On 18 June 2022, Stiller walked the streets of Lviv and talked to passers-by, before travelling to Makariv and Irpin.
- Carry Fukunago
Shortly after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in April 2022, director Cary Fukunaga came to Kyiv. The director of 007: A Time to Die was with Kyiv residents in the subway during the air raid.
Fukunaga joined the World Central Kitchen project, which organises meals after natural disasters. In the subway, he and his team distributed food to residents of the capital. Impressed by the stories of war victims, Fukunaga filmed the bomb shelter to tell the world about the real situation in Ukraine.
- Liev Schreiber
Actor and producer Liev Schreiber has visited Ukraine twice. In April 2022, he came to Lviv, and in August he visited Kyiv. The star is an ambassador of the UNITED24 charity platform, which aims to help Ukrainians in difficult times. Liev is involved in the creation of a separate military hospital for wounded Ukrainian defenders.
Earlier, OBOZREVATEL told about the presentation of the book "Top 100 American Entrepreneurs of Ukrainian Descent". At the event, Hollywood stars supported Ukraine by raising $80,000.
