Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch was born July 19, 1976 in London to the family of actors Timothy Carlton (his real name - Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch) and Wanda Wentham.

Benedict went to Brambletay school in West Sussex, and then - in a very prestigious Harrow School in north-west London, where he made his debut on stage. Benedict's first role was the queen of fairies and elves Titania in William Shakespeare's comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream.

After graduating from school, Cumberbatch spent a year teaching English in a Tibetan monastery. After that, the young man entered the University of Manchester, where he studied theater. Here he met his girlfriend Olivia Pulet. Cumberbatch then did an internship at the London Academy of Musical and Dramatic Art.

Benedict is a serious theater actor. Since 2001, he has played leading roles in several theaters: the Open Air Theatre in Regency Park, the National Theatre, the Almeida Theatre, the Royal Court Theater.
