A mountain tunnel of a highway in the Himalayas collapsed in India. Forty workers were trapped under the rubble in the state of Uttarakhand.

People have been waiting for help for two days due to a lack of rescue materials. So far, excavators are removing debris to pave the way for the trapped. Oxygen and food are being supplied to them through compression pipelines, Reuters reports (scroll to the bottom of the page to watch the video).

It is noted that this region is prone to landslides, earthquakes and floods. Prior to the collapse, the state experienced land subsidence. Geologists blame this on construction in the mountains.

"The rescuers were waiting for a wide steel pipe to be delivered after midnight, which then had to be pushed into the excavated rubble to safely pull the workers out in about 24 hours. They have enough water, as well as oxygen and food for instant energy, such as dried fruit," said Devendra Singh Patwal, a disaster management official.

Officials also note that there is enough light in the room.

The 13-meter-wide, 15-meter-high tunnel, which trapped the workers for two kilometers, was being built on a national highway that is part of the Patwal Hindu pilgrimage route. It collapsed around 5:30 am on Sunday morning.

The workers are mostly migrants from other Indian states, and two are locals.

About 80 police officers, 20 firefighters and 60 disaster relief personnel took part in the rescue operations.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, Iceland has previously declared a state of emergency. There is a threat of a volcanic eruption in the country. In the area around Mount Torbjorn on the Reykjanes Peninsula, earthquakes have been occurring daily for two weeks due to the accumulation of volcanic magma at a depth of 5 km underground.
