Iran and Russia quarrel over islands in the Persian Gulf

The aggressor country Russia and Iran have quarreled again over three disputed islands in the Persian Gulf. Moscow and Arab countries issued a statement challenging Tehran's claims to the Greater Tomb, Lesser Tomb, and Abu Musa islands, which are also claimed by the United Arab Emirates.

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Charge d'Affaires of the Russian Federation and handed him a note to be handed over to Moscow. This was reported on Sunday, December 24, by the official Iranian news agency IRNA.

The ministry criticized the fact that Russian representatives supported the "unfounded claims" contained in the statement following the sixth session of the Russian-Arab Cooperation Forum at the level of foreign ministers.

As noted, the Iranian Foreign Ministry in a conversation with a Russian diplomat emphasized "the territorial integrity of the country" and stressed "the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries as one of the well-known and fundamental principles in relations between countries."

The statement said that the islands in the Persian Gulf "belong to Iran forever".

It should be noted that in the statement of the Arab-Russian Cooperation Forum held in Morocco, the countries called for "a peaceful resolution of the conflict between Iran and the UAE over the islands."

It is worth noting that in July 2023, after such a step by Russia, Iran also summoned the Russian ambassador and stated that it supported the territorial integrity of Ukraine, but did not stop its military support for Moscow.

Located in the Persian Gulf, the three strategically important islands of Greater Tomb, Lesser Tomb, and Abu Musa are situated near the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil production passes.

Tehran took control of these territories after British troops left them in 1971. Iran considers them an integral part of its territory. The UAE also claims the islands and has long insisted on resolving the issue through negotiations.
