British Parliament calls on Cameron to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism: how it will help Ukraine

A group of 13 British MPs and five peers called on Foreign Secretary David Cameron to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism. In their opinion, this will, in particular, open the way to the confiscation of Russian assets frozen by London.

A letter in support of the campaign was launched by the public initiative UK Friends of Ukraine. The authors of the letter reminded that the second anniversary of the full-scale invasion is approaching, although Russian attacks have been going on for almost nine years.

British MPs said they were shocked by Russia's actions.

"We are therefore state that Russia should be recognized by the UK government as a state sponsor of terrorism . The United Kingdom could become the first major Western country to outlaw the Russian state," the letter reads.

It is also noted that in November 2022, the European Parliament adopted a resolution recognizing Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, and later, in September 2023, the British government recognized the Kremlin-controlled Wagner Group as a terrorist organization.

"After the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, when the Wagner militants were assimilated into the command structure of the Russian Armed Forces, it now fully operates as a terrorist unit of the Russian state. A country that continues to carry out terrorist acts against the citizens of Ukraine, which is quite legitimately defending its independence from the aggression of its neighbor," the MPs said.

They also pointed to the relevant report by UK Friends of Ukraine, which refers to "thousands of terrorist acts committed by the Russian state."

According to the British MPs, recognizing Russia as a terrorist state could become "part of the government's legislation to move from freezing to confiscating Russian assets" that could be used to rebuild Ukraine.

The parliamentarians reminded that London has frozen more than 18 billion pounds (almost 380 billion UAH) of Russian assets since the full-scale invasion.

According to the letter, British MPs should demonstrate their continued support for Ukraine by voting to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism and proposing a legal plan for the confiscation of frozen Russian assets.

"We believe that it is time for the UK government to demonstrate its opposition to state sponsorship of terrorism and fulfill its obligations as a key ally of Ukraine. That is why we call on the UK government to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism and add it to the list of state sponsors of terrorism," the MPs and peers said.

At the same time, the Group of Friends of Ukraine in the United Kingdom launched a petition to influence the UK government to make the United Kingdom the first G7 country to officially recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.

As reported earlier, British intelligence stated that Russia is strengthening its control over the Wagner PMC. This is evidenced by the inclusion of former Wagner assault units in the "Rosgvardia Volunteer Corps".
