French defense companies to manufacture equipment in Ukraine
French Defense Minister Sébastien Le Coronneu said that French defense companies intend to open production and repair of military equipment in Ukraine. According to the head of the defense ministry, the first production may begin in the summer of 2024.
Le Coronneu emphasized that the entry of French companies into the Ukrainian market would help Kyiv in repelling a full-scale Russian invasion. This was reported by the Financial Times.
According to preliminary data, these are three French defense companies. Among them is KNDS, a joint venture between the French state-owned company Nexter and the German Krauss-Maffei Wegmann. This company produces ammunition, Caesar howitzers, and combat vehicles. Arquus, a company that specializes in military vehicles and chassis, may also start producing weapons in Ukraine. The third French company in Ukraine may be Delair, a manufacturer of drones.
"The three French companies will establish partnerships with Ukrainian companies, particularly in the drone and ground vehicles sector, to produce spare parts on Ukrainian soil, and possibly ammunition in the future," Le Coronneu said.
Notably, Nexter, which is part of KNDS, said that since September 2023 it has been negotiating to find a partner to bring maintenance and production closer to the front line. A company spokesperson said it would take several weeks to find out what could be done. At the same time, the company said that the French government asked Nexter to support Ukraine at the local level.
As a reminder, France intends to create a coalition of countries whose leaderships will be ready to send their troops to Ukraine. According to French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne, the terrorist country Russia should not tell Europe how to help Ukraine in the coming months or years.
Earlier it was reported that French President Emmanuel Macron is considering a scenario of sending troops to the territory of Ukraine if the Russian occupiers manage to break through the front towards Odesa or Kyiv. The president spoke about this with the leaders of the country's main political parties at a meeting organized on March 7.
