Usyk was detained in Krakow

The former absolute world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk was handcuffed at Krakow airport per the procedure as a preventive measure. Our compatriot was allegedly very unhappy with his detention by Polish border guards, which is why he was unable to fly to Valencia.

This was stated by Jacek Michalowski, a representative of the Carpathian Border Guard Detachment, in an interview with Przegląd Sportowy Onet. According to him, two people from Usyk's team lost their passenger status and were therefore not allowed to board the plane. The official noted that there was no physical impact on the Ukrainians.

"I can confirm that the interference concerned two people with Ukrainian citizenship. This is the case when the carrier does not allow them to fly. They lost their passenger status and were not allowed to fly. They did not want to leave the gate, the plane could not take off. They did not respond to the requests of our employees and, following the procedure, our employees from the special group intervened. There was no clash or any threat, it was a purely preventive measure," Michalowski said.

Earlier, Polish promoter Andrzej Wasilewski called the situation with Usyk's arrest shameful for Poland. The incident itself caused social media to explode with memes. The American edition of ESPN revealed the details of the detention of the Ukrainian champion.
