28-year-old British boxer Sheriff Laval (0-1, 0 KOs) died during a middleweight fight with Portuguese Malama Varela Laval (2-4, 2 KOs). The boxing show at the Harrow Leisure Center in London ended in tragedy.
In the fourth round of the 6-round fight, Laval missed a punch to the temple, after which he fell unconscious to the canvas. Referee Lee Avery initially started the countdown, but then stopped, urgently calling for a doctor to the ring.
The medical team performed CPR for ten minutes and tried to resuscitate the athlete with a defibrillator, but could not save him. Laval was taken to Northwick Park, where he was pronounced dead.
Other scheduled fights on the show were canceled following the incident.
WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury also commented on the situation.
"God rest his soul. When you play this sport, you know it's dangerous. You get paid for the danger because you can get your brains blown out. We are not here to tickle each other. We're here to hurt each other by hitting each other in the head and body, and unfortunately things like that happen from time to time," Fury said in an interview with SkySports.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, a month ago, former British and European Union boxing champion Willie Limond died at the age of 45 after suffering an epileptic seizure while driving his car.
