Scientists say blood tests of long-lived people may help unravel the secret of longevity

Blood test of people aged 100+ may contain clues to the secret of longevity

Scientists believe that blood biomarkers of people over 100 years old can help reveal the secret of longevity. Thus, a group of researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that long-livers have lower blood glucose, uric acid, and creatinine levels than other people.

This is stated in the study, which was published in the leading international academic journal GeroScience. An important clarification: these differences in biomarkers were noticeable long before these people turned 100, namely at the age of 65.

To establish this, the researchers analyzed data from more than 44,000 people who were tested at the Central Automated Laboratory (CALAB) in Stockholm between 1985 and 1996. 1,224 of them lived to be 100 years old.

The following blood biomarkers were studied:

- uric acid (inflammation);

- total cholesterol and glucose (metabolism);

- alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, albumin, gamma-glutamyl transferase, alkaline phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase (liver)

- creatinine (kidneys);

- iron (risk of anemia);

- albumin (nutrition).

In long-livers, biomarker profiles rarely had values at the lower or upper end of the normal range. In general, those aged 100 years and older had lower blood glucose, uric acid, and creatinine levels, and higher total cholesterol and iron levels than average people.

"Uric acid, a marker that is influenced by various factors, including diet and alcohol consumption, shows differences between the two groups (long-livers and average people). These results suggest that dietary and lifestyle factors may play a role in exceptional longevity," says Shunsuke Murata, one of the study's co-authors.

However, according to him, scientists are still unsure how much the value of biomarkers depends on lifestyle and how much on genetic factors. Thus, Murata noted, the next step for scientists will be to study the combinations of these biomarkers.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, scientists said they had found the secret of longevity for women. According to them, it is not weight loss that can help to live to 100 years but maintaining its stability in adulthood.
