Italy demands creation of the EU army to become a global peacekeeper
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has launched an initiative to form a single army in the European Union. In his opinion, such a structure could play a role in maintaining peace and preventing conflicts on the European continent.
The head of the diplomatic department emphasized that closer European cooperation in the field of defense is a priority for the Forza Italia party, which he leads. This was reported by Reuters.
The Italian Foreign Minister said that the European Union needs a unified European armed forces that can become peacekeepers in the world.
"This is a fundamental prerequisite for being able to pursue an effective European foreign policy," Tajani said.
At the same time, he noted that various crises could pose a threat to the European Union, ranging from the Middle East to the Indo-Pacific region. Tajani believes that only with a united European army will the EU be able to protect its citizens.
"In a world with such powerful players as the United States, China, India, Russia, with crises from the Middle East to the Indo-Pacific, Italian, German, French or Slovenian citizens can only be protected by what already exists, namely the European Union," the minister said.
In addition, Tajani said that the 27-nation EU should rationalize its leadership and have a single presidency, rather than the current structure of the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission.
As a reminder, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called for the continuation and strengthening of military assistance to Ukraine to combat a full-scale Russian invasion. She noted that without the support of the Ukrainian army, the war would have been closer to Europe, in particular to Italy.
As OBOZ.UA reported, in May 2023, during a visit to Italy, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Meloni. The Italian prime minister stated her unwavering support for Ukraine and Rome's approval of all 10 points of the Ukrainian peace plan.
