While it is winter in Ukraine, summer continues in the Antarctic, where the Ukrainian Arctic station Akademik Vernadsky is located, as the seasons are in opposition in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The polar explorers decided to show what the longest day of the year looks like on Galindez Island.

Ukrainian researchers filmed the day of the summer solstice on December 21 in 1 minute. They shared the amazing video on the National Antarctic Research Center's Facebook page.

"In total, the daylight hours lasted almost 22 hours and 25 minutes. The sun began to rise at 02:02 am and set at 00:27 on December 22," the polar explorers said in the post.

Interestingly, the day on December 20 was shorter by only 10 seconds, and on December 22 by 36 seconds.

"If until December 21 the length of the day was constantly increasing, now it is decreasing. This will be the case until June 20, when our Galindez Island will have the shortest day - almost 3 hours and 24 minutes. After that, it will increase again," the researchers noted.

Since Akademik Vernadsky station is located just north of the Arctic Circle, there are no traditional polar or white nights here. That is, in winter, the Sun still rises above the horizon for several hours, and in summer, it disappears behind the horizon.

The video, shot by the 29th UAE's system administrator Oleksandr Matsibura, shows not only the longest day, but also the speed of weather change near Vernadsky and the operation of the solar tracker on which the camera was mounted.

According to scientists, this device is needed to correctly point the measuring sensors at the Sun. It is also used to shade the disk of our star in order to cut off the flow of direct sunlight from the pyranometer to measure scattered solar radiation.
