The movie that will break your heart finally released on Netflix: why you should watch Aftersun with Paul Mescal
The 2023 Oscar nominee and winner of the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, Aftersun is finally available on Netflix. In the film, Irish actor Paul Mescal plays the role of a caring but surprisingly capricious and sad father, Calum, while his daughter Sophie, played by 13-year-old aspiring actress Frankie Corio, learns about the "beauty" of growing up.
Aftersun is the debut film of director Charlotte Wells and has already received numerous positive reviews around the world. On Rotten Tomatoes, the critics' approval index is 96%, which indicates that the film is incredibly well shot. The film takes viewers into the world of Sophie's memories, exploring the theme of loss and love through the story of her father and her early teenage years.
In the film, Paul Mescal plays a young father who has abandoned his family but later tries to build a strong relationship with his daughter by inviting her to spend a vacation with him alone. They went to the seaside in Turkey. After 20 years, she recalls certain fragments of that period of her life and tries to understand their true value.
As an adult, while watching videos from her vacation, she realizes that her "sad" father was actually depressed but hadn't told anyone about it for years. The plot of Aftersun was highly appreciated because it touches the viewers' own feelings and makes them rethink their memories and relationships with their loved ones.
According to Digital Spy, Aftersun was of great importance to director Charlotte Wells. And not only because it was her debut film but also because it was her own reinterpretation of her childhood and was based on memories from the past. Wells received the BAFTA Award for Best Debut in 2023.
Aftersun was nominated for 65 film awards worldwide. The film won 62 of them, including the Cannes Film Festival 2022, BAFTA 2023 and Gotham Awards 2022.
