South Korea bans sale of nearly 700 goods that could be used to kill Ukrainians to Russia

South Korea is tightening export controls on dual-use goods sent to Russia and Belarus and banning 682 items from being shipped to these countries. These are items that are actually or potentially used for military purposes.

This was reported by Yonhap. It is noted that:

  • the changes will come into force on February 24;
  • the total number of goods prohibited for sale to Russia and Belarus will increase to 1,159 items.

However, there is still a loophole for supplies. The fact is that the Korean government allows for "exceptional cases" of the need to supply banned goods and will consider each of them separately.

What was banned from supplying to Russia and Belarus

In general, the goods banned from supplying to Russia and Belarus include heavy construction equipment and batteries like:

  • aircraft components and machinery;
  • used cars with engines of 2,000 cubic centimeters or more, which account for the vast majority of South Korean car exports to Russia.

EU outlines the term of sanctions against Russia

At the same time, the Council of the European Union extended sanctions against Russia for the occupation of part of Ukraine. Now they will be in effect for at least 1 more year, until February 24, 2025. According to the decision, not only new rounds of prolongation of restrictions but also their strengthening are not excluded in the future.

"As long as the unlawful actions of the Russian Federation continue to violate the prohibition on the use of force, which is a serious violation of international law, it is appropriate to maintain all measures introduced by the Union and to take additional ones, if necessary. ...This decision applies until February 24, 2025," the document says.
