It is said that bedding should be washed at the highest possible temperature – this is the only way to kill all bacteria and dust mites. However, do not forget about the risk of fiber damage.
In summer, bedding should be washed more often to maintain its hygiene. Experts emphasize that choosing the highest temperature to kill bacteria and germs is unnecessary.
Sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers should be washed at least once a week, given the accumulation of sweat, dead skin cells, and dirt.
Cleaning expert Lynsey Crombie emphasized that in the summer, the frequency of washing should be increased.
"During the summer months, we naturally sweat more, so the frequency of washing should be adjusted," Cromsby emphasized.
Irregular cleaning of bedding can lead to acne and itchy skin. A common negative consequence is the appearance of allergies from dust accumulation.
Most people wash their bedding at 90°C, but washing at a lower temperature consumes less energy and is also less aggressive on fabrics, so they wear out more slowly.
"To save money and energy, it's always better to wash at lower temperatures, but when it comes to bedding, towels, and underwear, try to choose a temperature of 60°C," the expert advised.
This will be enough to kill all bacteria.
One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to keep your bed fresh is to open the windows when you wake up simply. Before you make your bed in the morning, let the linen air out perfectly with the windows open.
This will allow moist air to escape from the bedroom to prevent dust mites. As the moisture evaporates faster, sweat and unpleasant odors that can accumulate at night will be neutralized.
It is especially important to wash pillowcases more often in summer because moisture is absorbed most of all in pillows, which means that bacteria actively multiply.
If the pillows are made of polyester, they can be washed in a machine with a delicate cycle using a regular detergent, but do not add fabric softener.
It is worth turning on the double rinse cycle to remove as much foam as possible. Read about the best ways for different fillers in the article.
