Vents work almost invisibly, providing air circulation in the room. At the same time, over time, they accumulate dust and dirt that fly in this air - they settle on the grilles and fall into the shafts. For sensitive people, this causes respiratory problems and allergy and asthma attacks.

Regularly cleaning the vents can remove these contaminants. And it can also reduce energy costs, as clogged ventilation negatively affects the operation of air conditioning and heating systems, which affects bills.

Fortunately, these areas can be cleaned every 6-12 months, depending on how quickly dust accumulates in your home. It also depends on whether you have pets or children, whether someone smokes indoors, etc. And here's how to clean the ventilation properly.

First of all, get all the tools ready. You will need:

• a vacuum cleaner - a household vacuum cleaner will suffice;
• a brush with soft bristles;
• microfiber cloth;
• Allen wrench or screwdriver;
• gloves, mask, and goggles.

Start by turning off all systems that operate through the vents. Next, remove the grilles from the vents and wash them with soap and water, then let them dry.

While the grilles are drying, remove any debris from the system that you can reach. Use a brush or scrub brush to do this. Then vacuum up any deeper dirt. When you are finished cleaning, wipe the inside of the ventilation duct with a damp microfiber cloth to collect any remaining dust.

Finally, replace all the grilles and turn on the ventilation, air conditioning, or heating, depending on what you are currently using. Wash the floor under the openings.
