The American crime drama series When They See Us has captivated Netflix's moviegoers so much that they are ready to dedicate odes to it. The film made it into the top 30 best series released in 2019, and it took second place after Chornobyl.
On IMDb, this four-episode miniseries has an 8.8/10 rating, which is the same as legendary films that are loved by both ordinary viewers and critics. In the Netflix Bangers Facebook group, comedian Maddie Smits shared her impressions of the movie.
"Sometimes a movie is so strong..... You can only watch it once... This series made me cry at the end. It's a great series, overall I liked it 10/10," she wrote.
What is the series "When They See Us" about?
The series is based on real events that took place in 1989 in Central Park in New York, USA. Five dark-skinned Latino men were falsely accused of raping a "white" woman in a public place. In four episodes, screenwriter Ava DuVernay was able to fit the entire plot of the case: from the moment of arrest to their release and acquittal in 2002. This falsification not only took 13 years of the young men's lives but also ruined their future success.
The movie tries to reveal the problem of discrimination against people based on their skin color. In particular, in the series, the screenwriter decided to explain the injustice of the US legal system, social prejudice, and the consequences of racism.
