Tourist locations of Zhytomyr region

Zhytomyr is far from the first place in the tourist rating of Ukrainians. Most people think that there are no interesting locations here. However, this is not the case. It is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine. Therefore, it is definitely worth a visit.

We will tell you what to see in the historical center of Polissia.

Suspension bridge over the Teteriv River

We recommend starting your exploration of Zhytomyr from this crossing. It offers beautiful views of the river slopes and the old districts of the city.

The engineering structure is located in Gagarin Park. The project was implemented before the Olympic Games. It was planned to build several suspension bridges, plant gardens near them and build new residential areas. From a distance, the landscapes were supposed to float in the air.

But out of all the plans, the money was enough for only one crossing. Unfortunately, the other one was quickly abandoned. The ski slopes, cable car, alleys, fountains, and so on never came to life.

By the way, the structure has two popular names: Zarichanskyi and Lovers' Bridge. Traditionally, couples hang locks here and throw the keys into the water. It is also a favorite place for photographers. And no wonder. You can take beautiful photos here at any time of the year.

House-heart

A unique building stands at the intersection of Teatralna Street and Peremoha Square. The building is more than 120 years old, but it still hasn't lost its charm.

In fact, the appearance of the three-story building is not a whim of the architect but a forced decision. The area allocated for construction did not allow for the construction of a standard house. Therefore, the walls had to be made at an acute angle rather than at a straight line.

The house has several nicknames. It is also called "chimera" and "flat". So there are "flattened" buildings not only in Odesa or Lviv.

The house is made in the shape of a triangle. From above, it resembles a heart. Initially, it was built as a city fire station. But there are other versions. Some believe that it was a brothel. According to yet another version, the unusual construction was a gift from a wealthy merchant to his girlfriend as a sign of love.

Museum of Academician Korolyov

The exhibition was placed in Zhytomyr for a reason. This is the small homeland of the famous scientist. Here you can get acquainted with the space heritage of Ukraine. The memorial house houses soil samples from the Moon, models of the vehicles that photographed the satellite and made the first landing on it. There are also some parts of the lunar rovers: antennas, engines, gears, etc.

The museum also houses the designs of the first ballistic and other types of missiles. Unfortunately, these weapons do not evoke the most pleasant emotions among Ukrainians today. So if you feel sick just from one word, it is better to avoid such stands. I would like to say only one thing: Korolyov's developments were actively used to study the upper atmosphere, not for war.

Chatsky's Head Rock

There is a monument on the left bank of the Teteriv River created by the flora itself. It is still not known in whose honor the hill is named. According to one of the legends, the natural monument represents a brave Cossack who jumped into deep waters with his horse.

According to another version, the rock reminds Zhytomyr residents of Tadeusz Czacki, a Polish ruler who founded several educational institutions in Ukraine. Thanks to him, the first Volyn gymnasium was founded in Zhytomyr, on the basis of which Ivan Franko University was later opened.

Filippov's mansion

A little-known pearl of Zhytomyr region is located on the corner of Velyka Berdychivska and Shevchenko streets. The mansion has an interesting history. Initially, it was a wooden manor house that was purchased by a local notary. For some time, the new owner did not have enough money to carry out a large-scale reconstruction. But over time, his wealth increased, and a real architectural masterpiece grew on the territory of an inconspicuous building.

The building acquired pronounced Baroque features. The façade was framed by white arches and magnificent stucco moldings, and the old windows were replaced by stylish rounded glass panes.

Until the beginning of the October Revolution, the walls of the mansion welcomed both the owner's guests and his clients. The house was divided into two sections: home and work. Ivan Filipov was very popular. People from the Volyn district even came to visit him.

Now the building has been completely restored. Today it houses several organizations: the Department of Justice and Culture and the local registry office.
