In 1911, the famous Czech ethnographer and photographer Karel Hotek visited Kyiv. Thanks to his camera, we have not only the landscapes of the capital, but also the everyday life of its inhabitants.
The archival photos were published in the Native Kyivan Club community on Facebook. You can see what the city looked like before the First World War.

Karel Hotek was a Czech ethnographer, ethnologist, photographer, and teacher. In 1911, he visited Kyiv. He took a series of photographs of the city's citizens, streets, parks, markets, and urban architecture. The photos are kept at the National Museum of the Czech Republic.
It is no exaggeration to say that the Hostynnyi Dvir is one of the hallmarks of the capital's Podil district. Thanks to the camera of an amateur photographer, we can see how its "old" building looked like in 1976 before a large-scale reconstruction.
The tram appeared in Kyiv at the end of the nineteenth century, but it immediately began to develop actively and became very popular among the citizens. The heyday of this mode of transportation was in the 1950s and 1960s, when its network was expanding and the cars were becoming more comfortable.
