Makeup is not only a hobby and a passion but also an easy and affordable way to make your daily life a little better. That's why makeup products have become a real multi-billion dollar industry. And some of them are nothing more than a marketing gimmick designed to make you spend more money rather than bring real benefits.

Refinery29 has collected seven such products, explained why you should leave them on the shelf in the store and what to replace them with to achieve the same effect.

Sunscreen or moisturizer that adapts to skin color

TikTok is full of reviews of sunscreens that change shade to match your complexion. The idea behind the product is that it contains a "universal" pigment and provides a lightweight base coverage in addition to UV protection. There are also moisturizers with the same effect.

Makeup experts say that although it does look impressive on camera, in real life, such a cream often gives an unnatural ashy or earthy tint. In addition, the addition of pigment reduces its protective properties. This is because people do not apply enough product to avoid turning their face into a mask.

Therefore, if you want to protect yourself well from UV and ensure a good complexion, it is better to use two products. First, cover your skin with sunscreen and let it absorb, and then apply a foundation.

Eyeshadow primer

Eyeshadow provides the greatest possibilities for experimenting with color in makeup. No wonder makeup lovers are ready to do anything to make them stay on well so that they do not roll off or crumble. And here they are offered an eye primer that is supposed to fix the product securely. The truth is, you can replace it with your regular primer that you use for the rest of your face. Unless otherwise indicated on the package, this type of product can be used on the skin around the eyes.

Lip primer is also considered questionable by makeup artists. Instead, you can use your usual concealer or foundation.

Peel-off lip tint

Makeup artists call this type of product a ridiculous TikTok gimmick. In real life, you're unlikely to want to spend 15 minutes in the morning waiting for such a tint to dry on your lips and then taking off the film for a few more minutes. And all in order to get the color effect that can be achieved in seconds with a regular tint, gloss, or lipstick.

Makeup sponges

Beauty bloggers often praise sponges for their ability to blend cosmetics well. The sad truth is that they absorb a huge amount of product, and you have to replenish your makeup bag more often. That's why professional makeup artists recommend applying foundation, concealer, or bronzer with your fingers and blending it with a brush. You'll be amazed how long the same tube of product will last with this approach.

Pencil for freckles

For the past few years, freckles have been a hot makeup trend. As soon as they became fashionable, special pencils for drawing freckles appeared on the market. However, eyebrow pencils of the appropriate color can easily cope with the same task. The thin stylus allows you to accurately draw specks, and the color of such a pencil is specially designed to exactly match the natural pigments of the skin and hair. You can also use it as a lip pencil, so there's no need to buy a separate product.

Mascara white primer

Manufacturers claim that this product can significantly lengthen eyelashes and increase their volume. On the one hand, this is true. On the other hand, such a primer clumps over time just like regular mascara, and it is even more difficult to cover it with color. And you'll just spend a lot of time in the morning painting over unwanted whiteness. Instead of using two products, it's better to buy one high-quality mascara with the effect you want, applying it in two layers.

Expensive makeup fixing sprays

If you decide to use such a product, read the ingredients list carefully, especially if you have sensitive or dehydrated skin. Fixing sprays can make your skin feel tight, itchy, and dull. This is because of the alcohol in such a product. Products with a matte finish are particularly problematic. They may fix your makeup, but they will dry out your skin. If you manage to find a water-based product, then you will have to wait until it is completely dry before you can touch your face after applying it. Otherwise, you will simply erase the makeup you have carefully applied. Therefore, makeup artists advise to use a translucent powder, not a spray, to fix the makeup.
