How to tell if a person is lying to you within seconds: FBI trained body language professional names "red flags"

Sometimes it's hard to recognize a lie by the way someone speaks, so one needs to know the physiological processes that happen to a person when they are nervous. Such facial changes as frequent blinking, active eye movement, difficulty swallowing, and redness of the skin immediately show that not everything is as it is told.

Scott Taylor, a body language professional who trained with the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, told the Daily Mail that although conclusions should not be drawn if only one of the signs matches, a combination of several should be taken into account. "There is no single indicator of deception, but the combination of body language and some words gives us significant results," he explained.

Red flags that indicate a person may be lying to you

  • Frequent blinking

"We blink 12 to 14 times a minute. In people who are stressed and tense, the blink rate increases dramatically," the man explained one of the most popular signs.

  • Licking lips
  • Difficulty swallowing

"When people lie, the body releases cortisol, a stress hormone that dries out the mouth and slows down saliva production," he said.

  • Touching the body
  • Bending the body at an angle
  • Lowering the chin (looking down from under the forehead)

A person subconsciously touches important parts of the body, such as the chin, navel, armpits, as if to protect them. Sometimes it can be a slight forward bend, which can cover a very sensitive area: the abdomen.

  • Redness

"When you're stressed, you release a little bit of adrenaline, and that causes the blood vessels to dilate, so more blood comes to the surface of the skin and you see redness," Taylor explained.

  • Pressing lips and stretching words

"You can also sense a lie if you see someone pressing their lips and stretching words. Politicians often stretch some of the words they have to say," he said.

  • Changes in eye movement

"When we are communicating with people, as soon as you notice that you are asking them something and they move on to a completely different point, and you see other signs and a slightly changed manner of speaking, this is the most important indicator of deception," the man explained.

  • Using convincing phrases like "You know," "Obviously," "Probably," "100 percent," and excessive eye contact

"People who tell the truth are just telling what they want, and liars are convincing, so you shouldn't say 'I'm 100 percent sure' if you're really sure. These people have excessive eye contact because they are think they need to be more convincing," the professional explained.
