Your washing machine needs to be cleaned thoroughly and regularly. A damp, dark environment is ideal for mold and bacteria to grow. The first sign of fungal spores is an unpleasant odor from the drum or rubber seals.

Experts emphasize that rubber seals quickly accumulate dirt, moisture, and detergent. And the filter, which is usually overlooked when cleaning the appliance, can be a source of unpleasant odors. House Digest explains how to keep your washing machine always clean.

Tip 1

If your washing machine smells like sewage rather than mold, it's a clear indication that you have a drainage problem. Standing water in the drum after a wash cycle indicates that the hoses are clogged.

First of all, it is important to understand that mold and mildew can only grow under favorable conditions. Therefore, you need to let the appliance dry between uses. You can do this by simply leaving the door ajar after a cycle.

If there is an exhaust fan in the room where the washing machine is located, you can also use it to reduce the humidity in the room. Turn on the extractor fan when you start the wash cycle. Then leave the fan running for at least 10-15 minutes after you empty the washing machine.

Tip 2

Vinegar is a great tool for fighting mold. You can add it to the laundry or treat the surfaces.

Tip 3

The rubber gasket protects the appliance from leaks and keeps dirt, water, and debris inside the machine during the cycle. However, it is the most common place for mold to form. Experts recommend soaking a cloth in a 1:1 mixture of bleach and hot water, wringing it out lightly, and placing it inside the seal for 10-15 minutes.

Tip 4

Containers for detergents and liquid laundry detergents also need regular cleaning. Sticky detergent residue collects in this area, turning it into a dirt magnet. Once you remove the dispenser, you can clean it thoroughly with baking soda or vinegar and a toothbrush.

The filter should be cleaned with mild soap and water, and this should be done at least once every three months.
