Sleeping with an open window is a great way to ventilate your bedroom and have fresh air in the room during hot summer nights. This idyll can be spoiled by a symphony of mosquitoes and flies, whose constant buzzing is not very favorable for sleep.

Window screens are a great, but not always effective solution. Experts told us how to drive away summer insects.

The first line of defense is to buy a strong window mesh net and install it properly. However, it is important to remember that insects enter the room through the smallest cracks.

After installing the mesh screen on the windows, inspect the frames for holes and seal them, as insects will quickly enter the cracks. But if the frame is rotten, you can't just putty the holes. Since a rotted wooden frame is a hot spot for pests, you will need to replace the damaged areas and seal the cracks with putty. If some areas cannot be repaired, the entire frame will have to be replaced.

Hang a bird feeder outside your bedroom window, as birds will naturally kill pests. As you know, mosquitoes are attracted to light, so instead of using central lighting, it is better to turn on a nightlight.

Some plants will repel flies in a natural and effective way. For example, the smells of rosemary, basil, peppermint, and lemongrass will repel mosquitoes and flies. You can buy fresh herbs and place them in shallow pots near the window.

Lavender essential oil is one of the most effective natural remedies for mosquitoes, flies, and even fleas. The plant with purple flowers looks extremely aesthetically pleasing, so you can plant it on a windowsill.

The pronounced citrus aroma of lemon balm will also repel insects. The effectiveness of the plant is explained by the high content of citronella, a compound naturally present in essential oil. A plant on the windowsill will help protect your entire home from insects.

If you live in a private house, you can plant marigolds near the windowsills – these are the most effective flowers in the fight against insects. The strong odor repels many pests, including spiders, mosquitoes, and flies. It is better to grow marigolds together with sage.
