How to get rid of clover on the lawn: instructions for gardeners

Weeds spoil the perfection of a green lawn. There are many reasons for weed growth - from improper preparation before laying the lawn to mistakes in care. Clover not only spoils the decorative appearance of the lawn, but can also act as an aggressor plant, displacing, for example, cereal grasses.

Clover is very unpretentious. By collecting nitrogen from the atmosphere and converting it into a form suitable for plants, white clover grows rapidly even on poor soil, where traditional grass coverings begin to dry out due to a lack of nitrogen. Experts tell you how to get rid of clover on your lawn.

Experienced gardeners emphasize that over time, a healthy lawn will overcome all types of weeds, including white clover. When grown in good soil and enriched with sufficient moisture, turf grows more vigorously than clover. Turfgrass can grow into clover colonies, reducing the weeds' ability to capture sunlight. Soon the clover disappears because it cannot live without sunlight.

A healthy lawn starts with good soil. Nutrient-rich, well-drained loam is the foundation of a lush lawn. Adequate moisture is another component. Turf thrives when it receives about 2.5 cm of water per week from rainfall or irrigation.

Mowing height also has an impact on turf health. Lawn grass is best maintained at a height of about 7.5 cm. Maintaining the lawn at a higher or lower mowing height potentially opens up the soil for weed seeds to take root.

Fertilizing is an effective way to limit the growth of clover. Typically, lawns "infested" with white clover grow on soil that is low in nitrogen. Clover can harvest nitrogen from the atmosphere to meet its needs, but turf cannot.

For quick results, you can use synthetic nitrogen fertilizers designed for lawns - they are best applied in spring or early fall.

There is also a natural way to saturate the bed with nitrogen. You just need to sprinkle a thin layer of compost - this will enrich the soil with many nutrients.

Herbicides will kill white clover if applied at the right time. While you may be tempted to take action by applying herbicide in the spring or summer when clover is lush and growing vigorously, wait a few months to get the best results. Research shows that fall is the most effective time to apply broadleaf herbicides specifically designed for white clover.

Clover is a food source for a variety of pollinators. Clover control products, such as synthetic fertilizers and herbicides, can have a negative impact on the environment. Natural fertilizers act more slowly than synthetic ones, but provide long-term soil improvement.
