A lampshade is a part of a lamp that is responsible for diffusing light and creating a cozy atmosphere. Over time, they, like any furniture, get dirty with dust, pet hair, etc.

To keep your lamps looking attractive and aesthetically pleasing, you should clean the shades regularly. Real Simple tells you how to do it correctly.

How often to wash lampshades

How often you need to thoroughly clean your lamp shades depends on the air quality in your home and the location of the lamp. If the lamp is in the kitchen, where you cook regularly, you will have to wash its elements more often, and if it is in the bedroom, where you regularly dust, then less often.

Usually, lampshades need to be deeply cleaned at least 3-4 times a year. In addition, they should be dusted every time you do a wet cleaning.

How to clean fabric lampshades

Fabric lampshades can be easily cleaned, but before doing so, you should remove any decorations that might fall off and cause damage.

First, remove the lampshade from the lamp and use a soft cloth or lint roller to dust it off. If there are any grease or dirt stains, first wipe them off with a mild detergent.

Then, put warm water in a bowl, sink, or plastic container and dissolve 2 tablespoons of liquid soap or dishwashing detergent in it. Soak the lampshades in the liquid for 10 minutes, and then wipe them from top to bottom on the inside and outside with a soft cloth. Finally, rinse off the soap with clean water and leave the lampshades to dry on a towel.

When the lampshade is completely dry after about 24 hours, you can put it back in place.

How to clean paper lampshades

First, dust off your lampshades. Then, dampen a clean microfiber cloth with water, wring it out well, and starting from the top down, gently wipe the outside and inside of the shade.

Be sure to support the paper on the other side when wiping the shade to avoid accidentally crushing or tearing it.

How to clean glass and plastic lampshades

Add a few drops of liquid soap or dishwashing liquid to warm water and immerse your plastic or glass lampshades in it. Use a soft cloth to remove dirt, then rinse the lampshades thoroughly under clean water and dry them with a dry, soft cloth to prevent streaks, stains, and water spots.
