How often you should reboot your smartphone: a little-known rule of thumb

Gadgets have had a huge impact on our lives, and one could even argue that the smartphone has become a real extension of the personality. But sometimes it starts to malfunction, and the first thing we do is reboot the device, which often solves the problem.

But do we really need to reboot our smartphones regularly? Wired tried to figure it out and give an expert answer to this question.

How often do you need to reboot your smartphone

In general, modern smartphone operating systems, including the market leaders Android and iOS, are designed to manage device resources very efficiently. No reboot is required to clear RAM or application caches.

But at the same time, a smartphone remains a pocket computer that has to work without breaks or days off, which can sometimes affect its performance. You may also experience connection problems and other malfunctions if you never reboot at all.

That's why experts advise giving your gadget a short rest once a week. If the device is malfunctioning or slow, this can improve its functionality. If there are no problems, you can skip this procedure.

How to reboot Android phones

To restart your Android phone manually, hold down the power button until the power menu appears. Select "Restart" and wait for the process to complete. If  the power menu doesn't appear for some reason, hold the power button down continuously for about 30 seconds to turn off the phone. Then press it again to turn it back on.

Some Android phones also offer the option to schedule an automatic reboot. Try going to the Settings menu and looking for the option to "Restart automatically at a set time". It may also be in the Battery & device care submenu, in which case you'll need to tap the three dots and select the Automation option. This feature allows you to choose the day and time for the usual automatic reboot.

Don't forget that you will have to enter your PIN code after the reboot, even if you have a fingerprint or other biometric unlocking set up. Also, keep in mind that rebooting is a rather lengthy process, as all programs and processes are restarted from scratch.

How to restart an iPhone

To restart your iPhone, hold down the power button and any volume button until the power slider appears. Drag it and wait 30 seconds for the device to turn off. To turn the device back on, press the power button again. If the power off slider is not displayed for some reason, try a forced restart.
