Hospice patients often reflect on their lives and their meaning. Many of them share their thoughts at the end of their journey, shedding light on real truths, says Bronnie Ware, a nurse who has had extensive experience in caring for the seriously ill.
The American spent many years of her career working in hospice care. As a palliative care nurse, she has seen many people on their deathbeds and cared for them in their last hours, Metro writes. Ware covers this difficult topic in her internationally bestselling memoir, The Top Five Regrets of the Dying.
I regret having devoted so much of my life to such hard work
Bronnie says that some of the most common remorse patients experience is related to their careers. She adds that this is especially true for men, given that the current older generation has positioned them as the breadwinners of the family. "Many people regret spending so much time working instead of spending time with family and friends.
I would like to live my life according to my desires, regardless of the opinions of others
The second lament of those on their deathbeds is about being true to themselves. According to Bronnie, this is the most common regret she has heard among patients. In her opinion, it's people's sadness over dreams they never achieved or even tried to achieve.
I regret losing touch with many of my friends
When people look back on their lives, a surprising number of them feel some remorse for letting a friendship fade away. Friendships, like all relationships, need to be nurtured. It's very easy to let communication go downhill.
I wish I was brave enough to talk about my feelings more
"Many people have suppressed their feelings to please others," says Bronnie, "and as a result, they have settled for a mediocre existence and have not become who they really wanted to be. Many developed illnesses related to the bitterness and resentment they carried around."
I would like to allow myself to be happier
Whether it's the fear of change or the fear of letting others down, many people take the easy way out. Over and over again. Throughout a lifetime, this can lead to a lack of happiness. "Life is a choice. It's your life," Bronnie wants to tell people, "Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly. Choose happiness."
