The fire at the DniproHPP in Zaporizhzhia is still being extinguished after a massive missile attack by the Russian Federation on March 22. The HPP-2 station is severely damaged and out of service.

This was reported by Vladyslav Ryabenko, head of the press service of Ukrhydroproekt, in a comment to OBOZ.UA. According to him, as of 17:00, the fire at the power plant has not yet been eliminated.

"Ukrhydroproject is currently investigating the situation. We confirm serious damage at HPP-2... A fire is currently being extinguished there, and specialists are already working to see what has been destroyed," Ryabenko said.

He clarified that it is impossible to destroy the DniproHPP with such strikes. "It is impossible to break through the pressure front with such missiles. It is quite densely concreted," the expert explained.

At the same time, according to the Ministry of Energy, despite serious damage, power engineers managed to put some of the equipment back into operation at DniproHPP. However, the plant is not yet generating electricity. Although the fire has not been completely extinguished, it has been localized.

As a reminder, according to the Prosecutor General's Office, DniproHPP was hit by eight missiles during the attack on March 22. Two hits were direct – at HPP-1 and HPP-2.

At the same time, according to Ukrhydroenergo director Ihor Syrota, it is not known whether HPP-2 will be able to return to work. However, the damage assessment is still ongoing.

In addition to threats to Ukraine's power grid and the power supply to the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP, the damage to DniproHPP poses risks to the environment. According to the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Southern District, soil contamination and leakage of oil products into the Dnipro has already been recorded. "The inspectorate's specialists have taken water samples for laboratory testing. All the obtained materials will be transferred to the Operational Headquarters of the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine and law enforcement agencies," the experts said.
