Cheese is one of the most popular products in the world. There are many varieties of it, but the most valuable ones are those with mold on them. The fungal spores make its taste special.

But what should you do with cheese that is not supposed to have mold but has it anyway? Can you eat it without harming your body? Dr. Karan Rajan, a lecturer at the University of Sunderland, answered these questions on TikTok.

If you unwrap a piece of cheese and see that it is covered with mold, the first thing that comes to mind is to cut off the spoiled part of the product and eat it in peace. However, it turns out that the mold that has formed on the surface is just the tip of the iceberg. The bulk of its spores remained inside the product.

However, by cutting off not only the mold but also about 2 cm of cheese that seems normal, you can reach a depth where the spores have not yet developed. This only applies to hard cheeses such as parmesan or cheddar.

You can do this if there is only one spot on a piece of cheese. If there are several green-blue ones, it is better to get rid of the product because it is completely spoiled. You should also beware of cross-infection and be sure to thoroughly wash your knife and cutting board after cutting the mold off.
