Bale, Portman, and other actors who lost weight for a movie role. Photos before and after
Today, computer technology is able to "make" on-screen characters both thin and curvy. So actors no longer have to abuse their bodies: urgently gain weight or, conversely, lose weight. But some directors want their stars to get used to the role as much as possible and play it convincingly.
Read OBOZREVATEL's article to find out which celebrities have lost extreme weight to get roles in famous movies.
1. Christian Bale
In 2004, British actor Bale lost 26 kilograms for the role of Trevor Reznick in the thriller "The Machinist." He was able to achieve an amazing result in just 4 months thanks to a special diet. It's also interesting that immediately after the movie was completed, the actor was offered the role of Batman, for which Christian had to gain 45 kilograms in less than six months.
2. Matthew McConaughey
In the movie "Dallas Buyers Club", Matthew was given the role of a man dying of AIDS. To get into the role, the actor lost 21 kilograms. For six months he was on a low-calorie diet, which made him lose 3 kilograms every week. McConaughey also didn't go out during the day for a long time so that his skin would become pale, and he didn't exercise so that his muscles wouldn't grow.
3. Chris Pratt
Usually, Chris plays characters in movies that do not require extreme weight loss or fatness. But for the movie "Guardians of the Galaxy," the star had to lose 27 kilograms and gain muscle mass in the gym.
4. Natalie Portman
The actress recalls preparing for her role in the cult movie "Black Swan" as follows: "I literally thought I was going to die." Portman had to lose 10 kilograms. This is not much compared to the "record" of her colleagues, but for her, it was almost a critical limit that could have led to anorexia. At 160 centimeters tall, Natalia weighed 43 kilograms. To become completely frail and thin, the star practiced ballet for 5-8 hours every day and ate almost nothing.
5. Joaquin Phoenix
In 2019, this actor lost 24 kilograms in a few months to star in the movie "Joker." According to Joaquin, he had to eat small meals of up to 300 calories every day. This also had a significant impact on the star's mental health, which he had to restore along with his weight for a long time.
